Chapter 29

Lamant’s workday was overloaded with client demands to reallocate funds into more secure interest bearing accounts. In this economy, even Lamant’s knack for creative financial projections in the gloomiest of times was being challenged. His boss, Neil Faraday, appreciated Lamant’s hard work but offered him no break even after his father’s passing. Especially since his last deal fell through. This was a business, and in business, personal matters were checked at the door, emotions were obsolete, and capital gains took precedence over family matters, even death.

For the most part Lamant could appreciate an office where men outnumbered the women. The less emotions he had to deal with, the better. And he had no problem meeting his deadlines. Up until now, his job felt somewhat rewarding. Lamant found himself staring off into space or out his window, completely ignoring the mounds of work he needed to get done, the deadlines he had pushed back, and his boss’s nagging e-mails regarding his current losses versus gains. Lately, Lamant felt that the total amount of money he brought into the company was never going to be enough for Neil to see what an asset he really was. His profits equaled around 1% gains for the company, so Lamant was easily expendable.

At this point though, he didn’t seem to care. He was only interested in finding Melinda. Since he’d kicked her out, she’d changed her number, blocked his e-mails and IM, and switched jobs. She held the key to his future as a writer. She was his muse.

Instead of googling recent foreclosed properties to finance a neighborhood takeover for his client’s convention center they wanted to build, he looked for Melinda. And, sure enough, he found Facebook, a place for friends. He signed up, and a half an hour later he searched for Melinda Devoe, age twentyseven, in Washington, D.C. As easy as it seemed, he found her. He looked through her page, and enjoyed viewing her photos and reading her wall posts. He learned she finished her masters in nursing and would begin a new job this fall as a nurse practitioner. She belonged to the Democratic Party and joined groups like Black Nurses in D.C., Obama for Change, and Old School Hip-Hop. She was in Cocoa City Network, and Howard University Network.

An hour went by, and Lamant was still engaged in looking up what his ex-girlfriend had been up to for the past seven months. He felt a wave of emotion surge. He missed her and wanted her back.

Another e-mail popped up from Lamant’s boss, reminding him that he had deadlines to meet that day. Lamant looked at the time. He was too smitten with thoughts of Melinda to care. He figured out how and decided to send her an e-mail, hoping he would get one back. He wrote on her wall, “Long time no see. Congratulations on your recent accomplishments. I knew you would always succeed.”

He was about to close out of her page until he paid closer attention to the left side of the Web site under her picture.
